Smoke sighting in Putty Valley

Several Putty residents have been in contact with concerns about the amount of
smoke coming into the valley from the west. Bulga Fire Control has been contacted and have advised that there is no fire close to Putty.

However, there is a bush fire burning in the Goulburn River National Park in the Merriwa River valley area. The fire is currently more than 4860 hectares in size and is being controlled.

The fire burning in the Merriwa River valley area is burning in an easterly direction towards the Golden Highway.

Residents in the Merriwa River valley, Worondi Creek Road, Sandy Hollow, Giants Creek and Gungal have been advised to monitor conditions and stay up to date in case the situation changes.

Firefighters have taken advantage of favourable conditions to implement a backburn along the southern edge near the Merriwa River and will continue backburning operations where possible over coming days.

Crews are working in some areas of difficult terrain, and will continue work on creating containment lines where possible.

Firefighters, with support of waterbombing aircraft and heavy machinery, will continue to focus efforts on the east and south east edges of the fire, particularly around areas of property protection lines, ahead of forecast north westerly winds which will see the fire grow in a southerly and easterly direction.

Fire on 8478 Putty Road

As the TOTAL FIRE BAN days continue, fire crews have been called to attend a fire on properties on and next to 8478 Putty Road, Putty. The fire started yesterday, Monday 1st December at midday and crews are attending the fire again today. While these properties are nearby the St. Shenouda Monastery, they are on the opposite side of Putty Road and there is no threat to the Monastery.

This is the second fire in Putty in less than a week. As the wind, heat and Total Fire Ban days continue, the risk of a fire starting is very high. The NSWRFS suggest not to operate any machinery such as chainsaws, mowers, welders or grinders in the open as they can all generate sparks that can ignite dry grass.

Unless Putty gets some good rain soon, the unfortunate fire conditions will continue. Please take extra care with your day to day activities and report any fire you see without a fire vehicle in attendance to Triple Zero.

Bush Fire Danger Period delayed

Bush Fire Danger Period delayed until 1 October, check weather forecast before lighting fire, high winds forecast.

After careful consideration, the Hunter Valley Bushfire Management Committee has requested the commencement of the Bush Fire Danger Period for the Hunter Valley District be delayed by one month.

This request has subsequently been APPROVED, with the commencement of the Bush Fire Danger Period commencing as of the 01st OCTOBER 2025.

The decision to request this delay is largely impart due to the ongoing wet weather and continued forecast of similar conditions. It will also bring the Hunter Valley area into line with changes made in neighbouring districts who will also commence their BFDP as of the 1st October.

Check weather forecast before lighting a fire because 25 – 40km/h winds are forecast.

CPR & AED familiarisation

Do you want to know how to perform CPR effectively and how to unpack and use an AED? Come to Putty Hall 11am next Saturday 28 June.

Would you know what to do if a person near and dear to you, a work colleague or a complete stranger, has a sudden cardiac arrest and you are unsure of the how to help.

Knowing how to perform CPR correctly and efficiently and how to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) without delay may save this person’s life.

To take the opportunity to learn how to do both, please join us at Putty Hall, this coming Saturday, 28th June at 11 o’clock.

An AED has recently been installed at Putty Hall. As well as others being located in and around Putty, the Putty Rural Fire Brigade vehicles each has one. Brigade members are invited to come along and refresh their knowledge of how to perform CPR and use the AED’s in the vehicles.

A Rural Fire Service first aid trainer will be bringing with her some CPR training mannequins and a training AED.

This will be ‘familiarisation’ only of both CPR and the AED operation and no formal accreditation will be achieved.

At the close of the session, you are welcome to stay for a chat and a sausage sizzle lunch.
